UK Game Shows That Failed To Capture Everyone's Imagination

National Knowledge Contest

The National Knowledge Contest was a general knowledge quiz show. It was hosted by Hughie Green and was broadcasted by ITV in 1973. The game was one of Green’s games and was based on the game show The Sky’s The Limit. It is also somewhat similar to the game show Fifteen to One since there were the contestants on the desks and there were the certain “lives” for each contestant which can be lost and regained accordingly.

The National Knowledge Contest is credited to Hugie Green who was also on Double Your Money, Opportunity Knocks and The Sky’s the Limit. Green was born in 1920 in London but then moved to Canada and became a Canadian Citizen. At the age of 14, BBC gave him a radio show and by the following year he was already the highest paid child star in the whole of Great Britain. Later on he created some of the most famous game shows for television. At the same time, he also appeared in them as the host.

Although credited with the catchphrase “... and I mean that most sincerely, folks” it was not originally his, but was the line of Mike Yarwood, the famous impressionist. Green died in 1997 and only then it was disclosed to the public that he was the father of the famous presenter Paula Yates.

Newlyweds

The Newlyweds was a dating show hosted by Gloria Hunniford and co hosted by Robin Houson, as a voiceover. The show was broadcasted by ITV from 1986 to 1987. It was the same as with the Mr and Mrs except the Newlyweds are more competitive. The show starts with three couples being split up. The one with the host will be asked revealing facts or questions about their partners. After they have completed answering the questions, their partners will be called over to answer the same question or give the revealing facts about themselves. After the first pair, the second set of contestants will have to do the same. The pair with the highest point or the one with the most number of questions correctly answered wins the prize. For lack of excitement, the show failed to stay on air for more than a year.

The host of the Newlyweds, Gloria Hunniford, was also seen in Go For It!; Strictly Come Dancing, as a participant in its 3rd series; That’s Showbusiness as team captain; and in We Love TV. She was born in Portadown, County Armagh in 1940. She started out as a presenter in Good Evening Ultter. Later on she had landed her own radio show on Radio 2. Her radio show was so successful that it lasted for more than a decade, from 1982 to 1995. Then she became a regular presenter in the Songs of Praise. She also hosted Open House, an afternoon chat show in Channel 5. She is the mother of Carol Keating of Blue Peter.

9 Live Quiz TV

9 Live Quiz TV was a puzzle game show broadcasted by 4 Ventures for E4 from 2004 to 2005 and was run by Channel 4’s subsidiary. The show was the same with the Quiz TV game show. There were puzzles and phone-ins. There was also the presenter who tries to host the game where virtually nothing ever happened. The show was based on the German game show of the same title.

To be able to play the game, viewers must call the premium rate telephone number. They should then be able to answer correctly the answer to the puzzle. Of course, how else? At the same time, for those who do not want to call but want to join the game, they can do so by emailing their answer to 9 Live Quiz TV. Phone in cost 60 pence if you use BT network but the rates may vary for mobile phones, other network operators and public phones.

For phone in, the contestants, after calling, will have to pass through the show’s selection mechanism. Then the contestant will either be put through the show, will be asked for his name and contact number, will be informed that his entry was unsuccessful or will be put on hold. If the contestant is put through the show, he will then have to answer the question live. If he is put on hold, he will have to wait to be put through at any given time. Other times, the show will call back the contestant to be put through later in the show.
