Breast Cancer Facts You Need To Know (Part VI)

(cont. IV. Types of therapeutic procedures used to manage the pathology)

Chemotherapy is also used for the different stages of breast cancer. The healthcare provider may recommend any one of the following treatments: neoadjuvant, adjuvant or treatment for advanced stage, depending on the stage of the cancer. The doctor will recommend the treatment before the surgery if he sees that the tumor can be made smaller so that the patient will not have a mastectomy or breast removal. Instead the tumor, as it shrunk down in size, can then be removed surgically. After surgically removing the tumor, the patient may require radiation therapy or adjuvant chemotherapy. These are recommended so that the cancer will be prevented from recurring. Chemotherapy can also be used in treating this secondary breast cancer (Chemotherapy 2009).

Hormone therapy, similar with chemotherapy, aims to reduce the chance of the cancer returning. At the same time, it controls the cancer in case it has spread to the other parts of the body. It is most often used for patients whose cancer is sensitive to hormones. Biological therapy on the other hand are designed to address the differences between normal cells and cancer cells while clinical trials are new test and studies aimed at finding the treatment for the cancer (Treatments and Drugs 2009).
