Breast Cancer Facts You Need to Know (Part I)

I. What Is Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is cancer of the glandular tissue of the breast. Breast cancer can be classified based on the origin of the tissue, such as epithelial or stromal. Most breast cancers come from the epithelial tissue. These can then be sub classified into DCIS, LCIS and papillary carcinoma. Breast cancer can also be classified pathologically by location, histology, grade of tumour, stage, immunohistochemical marker status and TNM classification. The location of the tumor is according to where the turmor originated, such as breast duct or ductal breast cancer. Grade of tumor is according to the look of the tumor, such as well differentiated if the tumor looks normal, poorly differentiated if the tumor does not look normal or moderately differentiated if the tumor is in the middle (What is Breast Cancer 2009).
