How Bacterial Vaginosis Develops

Bacterial Vaginosis do not just overgrow. BV develops when there are more harmful bacteria than the good bacteria in the area. Under normal circumstances, the good bacteria control the growth of the bad bacteria. When there are more bad bacteria than good bacteria, they can no longer control the growth of the bad bacteria. This will then lead to the development of BV.

The body, as the environment of the bacteria, can also contribute to the development of BV. Bacteria thrive in dark, damp and airless environment. Thus, if the vagina has the right condition/environment and the body’s immune system is low (the good bacteria cannot fight the bad bacteria or not enough to fight them), BV is more likely to develop.

Three things have been found to be associated with the development of BV:

·        Douching
·        Having new sex partner
·        Having multiple sex partners

These things make the vaginal area the right environment for the overgrowth of the bacteria.
